Meningitis

By far the biggest concern for parents is the fear that you will catch meningitis at uni.

This is because things such as kissing, coughing and sneezing spread the bacteria that cause the disease.

Outbreaks, although rare, can happen at university as the bacteria is more likely to spread in environments where people are living close together in big groups.

It is important to note that the disease is very quick to develop and has been known to spread in hours. Therefore you have to be aware.

The Guru wants to make you aware that often the symptoms are similar to the horrendous hangover feeling you experience after a night on the town:

  • nausea and vomiting
  • aching back and joints
  • a stiff neck
  • feeling feverish
  • a headache

These are usually the first stages; however don’t be too alarmed the first time this happens, the likelihood is that you have had too much to drink.

Please be aware that if any of the following symptoms develop then it is extremely important that medical help is sought urgently:

  • severe light aversion or dislike of light.
  • Feeling disorientated
  • A rash that looks almost bruise like that does not fade when put under pressure
  • Coma
