Some simple tips to help prevent you becoming a prime target for burglars and other criminals.

  • Always lock your door even if you are only nipping to your mates place next door or even the loo!
  • If living in shared accommodation or by yourself make sure when you go out your windows are locked and also all of the doors.
  • Make sure you list your property, perhaps take down serial numbers or even photograph items (this may come in handy for insurance purposes).
  • Do not leave your drinks unattended. With ‘spiking’ of drinks on the increase it is important you or a friend keep your eyes on your drinks at all times.
  • Try to use cash points in well-lit busy areas. Remember to keep your pin safe!
  • Don’t travel alone at night, if you must stay at a friends or make sure you book a taxi with a reliable company.
  • Being a student you are more than likely to have more cash than ever before due to the generosity of the government and the banks (remember you have to pay them back!). DO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO SEE YOUR CASH, MOBILE PHONES, LAPTOPS as these are attractive items to thieves!!
  • If you have a car it is important you keep your windows and doors locked and shut whenever you're not in it. Unfortunately Leeds has a very high rate for car crime!
  • Do not leave anything on show in your car, as opportunists only need a minute!
