The small town is steeped in history as are the university buildings, many of which date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The size of the town allows everything to be easily accessed on foot, although riding bikes is very common. (You can have an extra 5 minutes in bed!). Student accommodation in St Andrews is primarily based in and close to the town centre. North Street and its surrounding roads are popular, not only for their views of the castle ruins but also for their proximity to the beach.
The small nightlife scene is chiefly in the centre and so any socialising usually takes place in the pubs and bars there. Shopping is best in the Buchanan Gardens area of the town; it has many shops and coffee houses to while away the hours.
