First years are welcomed into the university owned halls of residence but only on a first come first served basis, therefore many first years have to find private landlord owned housing. The cheap rent in the area makes this a less daunting task than it sounds and many areas are opening up to the student way of life.
The most popular area in recent years has been the Southfield Road area, as this area has embraced the students and is continuing to cultivate its scene to attract more student accommodation. The nightlife in this area is good as there are many pubs (new ones opening all the time), cafes and shops, most of which are specifically targeted at students.
The student union is always a safe bet for a night out but Teesside’s in an exception, it’s a safe bet for a great night out as in 2004 it won the best student union award in the UK. Not only that, but the union claims to sell the cheapest beer in the country!
Another excellent club in Middlesbrough centre is The Cornerhouse. This hosts many live bands; often big name bands, and also hosts SUMO club night. It’s cheap and it’s a great night out. The club is situated directly below the train station in the heart of the city, so transport links are good.
